Shame!

Hawaii's House of Representatives turned its back on equality Fri., Jan. 29, voting to "postpone indefinitely" the civil unions bill, HB 444.
In a cowardly move, Speaker Calvin Say called for a voice vote. Although the chorus of "ayes" and "nays" were equally loud, all but Rep. Joe Bertram were recorded as yes votes, denying the public the right to know how their legislator actually voted.
After Rep. Bertram's speech in opposition to the postponement motion, the vote was called before other legislators could comment, thus hiding which House members defected from last year's 33-17 majority that passed an earlier version of the bill.
The vote effectively kills the bill for this session, meaning thousands of Hawaii families will continue to live without rights, benefits and responsibilities for another year. This was a dark day for equality, but be on the lookout for an announcement Monday.
